Presidents Message May 2007

Len Robson

Firstly I would like to take this opportunity to thank the membership for the honor of representing PWABC during the 75th Anniversary year as a Public Works Association.  Ric Bain and Dave Myles have been very busy planning for the 2007 Public Works Association Technical Conference and MSA Trade Show to be held in Victoria where it all started in Oak Bay 75 years ago.  Ensure you register early as this promises to be a well attended event.

2007 will be both challenging and exciting year.  We say good bye to a couple of dedicated long standing members of the Executive Committee, welcome new members to the Executive and we work towards enhancing the highly successful “Leadership in Public Works” training sessions with a Public Works Supervisor Training Program.

Ron Bowman held our secretary position for the past 13 years along with Dianne Goldsmith who was our recording secretary.  Together they managed to keep the group focused, organized and provided a great historical perspective to the ever changing executive committee.  Their dedication, support and direction will be missed.

Peter Rowe has been commissioned to develop the highly anticipated “Public Works Supervisor Training Program”.  The plan is to produce a certification program collaborating with local BC colleges and the PWA to train and qualify current and up in coming Public Works Supervisors.  The course will be a 3 year program and we hope to have it available to start this spring or early summer.

National Public Works Week (May 20th to 26th ) is a great avenue to raise awareness of public works issues and to recognize those employees who are dedicated to improving the quality of life for present and future generations.  This year’s theme is “Public Works: Moving Life Forward”.  Plan ahead to celebrate Public Works Week in your community!

Yours Truly
