PWA News In Brief          March 2006

Highlights of the Executive Meetings held March 3,  2006.

The BC Chapter of APWA paid their respects  in the memory of the passing of Jack Pittis, Region 9 Director.  Jack was a very dynamic and respected leader in the field of Public Works, this was demonstrated by the number of people from all over North America that came to the memorial service.  The BC Chapter offers our condolences to Jack’s family.  (PWABC is in Region 9)

The Qualicum Beach 2006 Local Arrangement Committee chaired by Don Alberg is well on it’s way to making the Annual Technical Conference an exciting event.  Look for more details on our Website and in the June issue of the BC Road Runner as they unfold.

Click, Listen & Learn:  Your Executive is encouraging neighboring Municipalities to get together by hosting a “Click, Listen & Learn” site and inviting each other to these training opportunities.

The Education Committee is offering another “Leadership” seminar and this one is in Kelowna on April 10 & 11, see notice in this issue and on our Website.

Your Executive will be holding a joint meeting with the Alberta Chapter on June 17th in Kelowna.

PWABC is receiving the 2005 Chapter Achievement Award for the largest increase in membership of all chapters in the under 300 category, this award will be presented by a representative from APWA at the joint Alberta/BC meeting in June.

Your Executive is encouraging members and suppliers to submit article of interest for inclusion in the Road Runner Newsletter.

The Executive has directed that the positions and long range roles of the PWABC Secretary and Executive Administrator be reviewed  to insure continuity for the Association.

Our Education Committee will be meeting with the BC Road Builders & Heavy Construction Association with a view to sharing training opportunities.

Membership Chairman Bob Blumenauer informed us that we now have 296 members and he states we should easily break the “300”  threshold this year.  The benefits of membership is being recognized and appreciated.

Public Works Week is May 21 to 27, there are awards available to municipalities that have a program to promote Public Works in their community.  Many municipalities involve school classes in their events and this Executive is encouraging  all members to become involved and get the Public Works profile on display.

The Audited Financial Statements were presented.  Current financial report as of February 28, 2006 shows $7,995.57 in Chequing account and $45,907.47 in investments and $21,099.14 in the Education Fund, total assets $75,002.18.
