Box culvert
installation clamps - Entrants - Bill Goertzen (Drain. Fore.), Don Schulz &
Joe Clouatre (Shop Welders)
Cost - $900.00
These clamps came about
from a process of trying to find a better way to tighten the joints for
large box culvert installations, the weight and bulk of the sections has
always made for difficulties in getting even pressure when fitting the
sections together. Typically an excavator has been used to push on the open
end as the crane lowers the section into place, but this has never provided
a completely tight fit.
Bill Goertzen has been
trying different methods using comealongs to help guide the sections into
place. Through these endeavors he envisioned a clamp that could be attached
to the boxes and allow for attachment points for the comealong.
Bill approached, Don
and Joe and they put their heads together and came up with the clamps shown
in the pictures. These clamps are put on the ends of the side walls on both
sides of the box sections and then two comealongs are strung between them on
the inside of the boxes, allowing the installers to put even pressure on
both sides as the box is maneuvered into place, the clamps are simply moved
to the end of each new section and the comealongs are extended.
This has proven to be
very effective on the first project we used them on this spring. We had a
storm damaged crossing and it was upgraded to box sections.
The supplier (LC&T)
visited the site during the installation and have provided a letter (see
attached) stating that it was the best installation of their product that
they have seen.
Once again due to
their ingenuity and the desire to do the job to the best of their abilities,
Bill, Don and Joe have provided a solution for perfecting an installation
practice, giving us the best product possible.
